Why are Tai Chi and Chi Kung Classes so popular these days?
With stress related symptoms being one of the leading causes for trips to the doctor in the U.S. today, many health professionals have begun recommending classes like Tai Chi Class, Qigong or Yoga. These types of classes are particularly known for their ability to help promote feelings of relaxation and well being.

Why Chi Kung? Why not the Gym?
When you jump on a treadmill at the gym and stare at the TV or start chatting with the person next to you, your mind is not engaged on what your body is doing. The mind and body are disconnected. When the mind is not fully engaged, much of the benefit from the exercise is lost. When practiced properly this never happens with Chi Kung. In order to learn the exercise movements, your mind must be focused and engaged in the moment.

What if I have trouble sticking with an exercise program?
Everyone knows that exercise does a body good but too often people begin an exercise routine only to drop it as quickly as they began it. Joining a Tai Chi or Chi Kung class where you are led by an instructor and receive encouragement and support through a group setting can be just what you need to get started and stay motivated.

Is it true that exercise can really improve brain function in addition to reducing stress?  Yes, exercise is useful in stress management. But, according to John Ratey, MD, a Harvard professor and author of the recent book "Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain", he also recommends exercise for depression, anxiety and addictions as well as touting its ability to improve cognitive function. He further states that “Exercise is the most important tool people have to optimize brain function. If you get your body in shape” he says “the mind will follow”.

How does complex motor activity such as martial arts produce different effects in the brain?
According to Dr. Ratey, the more complicated the exercise, the more challenging it is. Martial arts and dance are perfect examples. You’re focusing parts of your brain as well as doing the aerobics. It optimizes the brain to learn. He goes on to state that exercise can “…delay cognitive decline by as much as seven to ten years. It plays a huge role in maintaining and regaining cognitive function.”

This sounds great but how do I find time in my busy schedule to take fitness classes?
It’s really quite simple. You need to make an appointment for yourself.  Think about it. If you do not take time out to take care for yourself, how well equipped are you really to take care of others? At the Blue Dragon School of Martial Arts, we are open 7 days a week and offer a flexible class schedule with morning and evening classes. Finding time in your busy schedule for a qigong class couldn’t be any easier.

Are the classes expensive?
Simply put, there is no price you can put on your health. Without your health you cannot truly enjoy what life has to offer. So regardless of whatever exercise program you choose whether it is Tai Chi, Yoga or a Qigong class, don’t let money stand in the way of healthy living. And fortunately, at the Blue Dragon, we help you get the most value from your dollar by allowing you to attend as many Chi Kung classes a week as you wish once you have joined our program.
